Kiowa AOA Caregiver and Supportive Services

Title VI Part C supportive services meant to improve quality of life and let elders stay in their homes longer rather than enter nursing home residency: respite caregivers, light home and auto repairs, residential lawn care, educational health presentations, referral services when the AOA lacks a service or the funding for it, and a free hair salon staffed by a licensed hairdresser (cuts, perms, colors, and trims) for qualified participants and their caregivers.

Who qualifies

Any enrolled tribal citizen

A qualified elder participant must be 60 years of age or older and a member of any federally recognized tribe — not Kiowa citizens only — and must reside within the AOA service area. Non-Indian spouses of a qualified elder, spouses aged 59 or younger whose spouse is a qualified participant, handicapped individuals residing with a qualified elder, and caregivers who reside with or assist handicapped elders may also participate; the department page limits the handicapped path to people 59 or younger while the program's own flyer says handicapped of any age. Before requesting AOA assistance, an elder participant must have inquired or applied with other entities or agencies for the same service and provide a copy of that application; the AOA reserves the right to follow up on it. The AOA does not pay an elder's personal bills or debts, and all services depend on funding availability.

How to apply

PhoneEmail

Call the AOA at 405-901-9231 or email AOA@kiowatribe.org with the request; the page publishes no application form. Lawn care requests are kept on a list in the order they come in, and the AOA will make an exception and move a request up if an elder receives a city citation for tall grass, has a snake infestation, or has lost a loved one; pick up large debris that could break a mower first. Hair salon services are free to qualified participants and their caregivers by appointment. For any assistance, bring a copy of the application you filed with another agency for the same need. Mailing address: PO Box 369, Carnegie, OK 73015.

Where it's available

The AOA service area is described by landmarks rather than counties and cannot be mapped to a county list: it "extends from 5 miles east of Carnegie, Oklahoma, with the Botone Church as our eastern boundary, stretching southward to Meers, Oklahoma. The western edge of the Kiowa AOA Service area is the Kiowa County line and North to the northern edge of the Caddo county line." One service reaches further: the AOA "provides Grass Cutting and weed eating beyond our service area to all Kiowa Elders for all 7 districts within maximum reason."
