Injury Prevention — Car Seats, Detectors and Fire Extinguishers
Free safety equipment for Comanche households — child car seats with required installation training, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and summer fans from May to August. Bicycle helmets are distributed free to the public at certain events.
Who's eligible
Tribal Citizens Only
The CNG guidelines (Resolution 171-2024) state for car seats: "Applicants must be a legal guardian to receive service"; a completed Injury Prevention Service Application is required; and under a heading reading "Comanche Only Service," "At least one (1) of the biological or adoptive parents or child must be a Comanche Tribal Member." Limits are two car seats per household — one for the mother and one for the father — or one per household for grandparents and legal guardians; separated parents must file separate applications and each receives one seat. As the child grows an updated application must be submitted so the correct seat is issued for age, weight and height. Car seat training is mandatory: "Legal Guardian must be present and Child(ren) must be present for the installation training," and "Car Seats will not be picked up by other tribal members, family members, or anyone else besides the applicant who applied." Distribution follows Oklahoma’s Child Restraint Law (O.O. 47-11-1112): children under 2 rear-facing; under 4 in a harnessed seat; 4 to under 8 in a car or booster seat unless taller than 4 feet 9 inches; and 8 or older or taller than 4 feet 9 inches in a seat belt, with all children under 13 in the back seat. For fire extinguishers: "Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age or older to receive service"; at least one per household, more case-by-case; pick-up only from the Injury Prevention office; malfunctioning equipment will be replaced; fire safety training is available on request. Bike helmets "are provided during children’s events or public events and are free to the public for distribution, when available." Emergencies are handled case-by-case, and services depend on availability.
