Federal Burial Assistance

BIA-funded burial assistance administered by Social Services on the tribe's "Federal Application for Burial Assistance." The application collects the deceased's tribe and roll number, income source and resources (checking or savings, burial policy, life insurance, IIM account, crime victim compensation, spouse income), the household composition, and funeral service information. This is separate from the tribe's own $7,000 Tribal Burial Fund for Kickapoo members, which is handled by the Enrollment Department.

The application checklist requires copies of the deceased's CDIB card, driver's license, Social Security card and birth certificate; a denial letter from the tribe of the deceased; a funeral home cost estimate on letterhead; proof of earned and unearned income; and proof of the deceased's residency (a current utility bill or postmarked mail within the last 30 days). The requirement for a denial letter from the deceased's own tribe indicates the program is a payer of last resort and is not limited to Kickapoo members. Income and resources are counted under 25 CFR Part 20.
