Tribal Burial Fund

On September 24, 2016 the General Council and Business Committee authorized burial funds of $7,000 for tribal members. The amount of each check request depends on the type of funeral: for a Kickapoo traditional funeral the family usually requests a portion ($500) with the remainder reserved for the tribal adoption held later, usually within four years; for a non-Kickapoo funeral using a funeral home, the check is made out to the funeral home and the family may request any remaining balance. For traditional funerals the tribe serves as its own funeral home and the Maintenance Department can supply transportation from the hospital to the Indian house, cook wood, tables and chairs, canopies, ice chests, portable toilets and cigarettes for the ceremony. The Enrollment Department also issues death certificates.
