Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma · FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Utility/Emergency Assistance Benefit
Up to $1,750 each fiscal year to reimburse paid utility bills for a primary residence (electric, natural gas, propane, water, trash, firewood up to $500, reconnection fees and a one-time deposit per utility). The same balance covers three pay-to-vendor emergency payments, each once per fiscal year: one month’s rent, move-in help (first month’s rent plus a once-in-a-lifetime security deposit), and an emergency utility payment when there is a shut-off notice. Amounts are from the website and the FY2023 Benefits Manual, the newest manual posted; call to confirm current amounts.
Who's eligible
Tribal Citizens Only
The Benefits Manual says: "Only enrolled members of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma are eligible to apply and receive services from this program" and "Services are for every member regardless of income, age or residence, unless stated otherwise." Future members qualify for services dated on or after their enrollment date. A person enrolled in more than one tribe "may share in the benefits of only one of them." For this benefit the applicant "Must be an enrolled Eastern Shawnee member," "between the ages of 18-61 and not be disabled," and "head of household." Only one Eastern Shawnee member per household can receive it, and a member living at home with a non-tribal parent is not eligible. Rental help requires a current rent receipt with a zero balance and a landlord statement agreeing to accept payment from the Tribe.
