Home Improvement Program (HIP)
Emergency and critical home repairs in three categories: urgent failures of water, sewage, gas, electrical or heating and cooling systems; other repairs needed to meet life-safety building code standards; and renovations for handicap accessibility including ramps and accessible bathrooms.
Who's eligible
Verify With Program
The Home Improvement Program page describes the three categories of covered repairs in detail but does not publish who qualifies — it states no tribal membership requirement, no income limit, no age limit and no service area. Category A covers emergency repairs: water line breaks, hot water heater leaks or ruptures, gas leaks, sewer backups, loss of heating or cooling when the outside temperature is below 60 or above 85 degrees, electrical sparking or shock hazards and loss of service to the home, plus handicap accessibility services. Category B covers other critical repairs to meet life-safety code: leaking faucets, faulty light fixtures, hot water heater repair or replacement, sub-floor repair, leaking roofs, broken exterior doors and window glass replacement. Category C covers accessibility renovations and handicap ramps. "Assistance provided is subject to availability of funds." Because the page names no eligibility rule at all, confirm requirements with CNHA before applying. The application is shared with the Elder Program, which suggests but does not establish common criteria.
